Apple’s first foldable phone is just over a week away from making its long-awaited debut, and it may already have a name.

After years of rumors, leaks and speculation, the company is expected to finally enter the foldable phone market at its September event.

And while Apple has yet to confirm what the device will be called, reports increasingly point toward a rather ambitious name.

Apple’s first foldable phone’s potential name

Apple has officially announced that its next major gadget event will take place on September 9 at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park.

The event is expected to bring the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but the really interesting addition could be Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone.

Reuters reported that Apple is expected to unveil its latest iPhone lineup at the event, with the foldable potentially being one of the biggest new additions, and it seems Apple may have already settled on a name.

The device has been referred to as the ‘iPhone Fold’ for years, but recent reports have increasingly pointed towards ‘iPhone Ultra’.

Tom’s Guide reported that ‘iPhone Ultra’ is currently the leading internal name for the device, though the publication noted the name is still not fully settled.

9to5Mac has also reported that Apple is expected to unveil an iPhone Ultra at the September event.

There is still plenty of room for a surprise, as Apple hasn’t officially confirmed the name, and other reports suggest the company could still go with the much more straightforward ‘iPhone Fold’.

That means we may have to wait until September 9 to find out exactly what Apple has decided to call its first folding phone.

The iPhone Ultra could be Apple’s thinnest yet

If the rumors are accurate, the name could be fitting because this won’t be an ordinary iPhone.

The foldable is expected to use a book-style design, with a smaller screen on the outside that opens up to reveal a much larger display.

According to MacRumors, current rumors point toward a roughly 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner screen.

That would give the device a screen approaching the size of an iPad mini when opened, while still allowing it to be used like a conventional smartphone when closed.

Apple is also reportedly putting a lot of effort into making the foldable as thin as possible.

The company is also rumored to have focused heavily on reducing the crease in the middle of the display, with a new hinge and display technology reportedly being used to make it much less noticeable.

There could be some compromises to achieve that slim design, however and one of the biggest could be Face ID.

9to5Mac reported that the foldable may use Touch ID built into the power button instead, as the components required for Face ID could be difficult to fit into such a thin device.

The camera setup could also be simpler than Apple’s Pro iPhones and MacRumors reports that the foldable is expected to have two rear cameras rather than the three-camera setup found on Apple’s Pro models.

After years of watching Samsung and other manufacturers experiment with foldable phones, Apple could finally be ready to join the party.

And if the rumors are right, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out whether the iPhone Ultra really is the name Apple has chosen.
