Nashville couple head to China and announce they are 'living in 2050' as they can't believe the tech

Forget, 2026 – when a couple from Nashville headed to China, they declared that they were ‘living in 2050’ as they couldn’t quite believe the tech all around them.

That was the verdict after the pair spent days trying out some of the country’s wildest gadgets and futuristic transport for themselves.

From drone-delivered drinks to a driverless taxi weaving through busy streets, the whole trip looked like a sneak peek into the future

And after seeing it all up close, they were left seriously stunned by just how normal this tech already seems in everyday life in the East Asian country.

Why Nashville couple stunned by futuristic everyday tech

The tech-loving couple kicked things off in Shanghai, where even ordering a drink felt futuristic.

Using WeChat, which they quickly realized is basically the all-in-one app for life in China, they placed an order at a drone delivery station in a park and waited for their tea to arrive from the sky.

When the drone finally swooped in and dropped the order into a secure pickup box, they could hardly believe it had happened so smoothly.

And that was only the start.

They also visited futuristic restaurants where robotic systems zipped food to tables, checked out hotel robots delivering room service, and wandered through car showrooms packed with features that felt way ahead of their time.

One of the biggest shocks came when they explored Chinese cars loaded with cameras instead of mirrors, huge entertainment screens, reclining seats, projectors, and even built-in fridges.

What really blew them away were car prices, with one ultra-high-tech model coming in at around $50,000.

China is ‘living in 2050’

Their trip also included a ride on China’s high-speed rail network and a visit to Beijing’s robot mall, where they found everything from lifelike humanoids to robot dogs and even a coffee machine that printed their faces onto a latte.

But the moment that really sealed the deal was their first ride in a driverless taxi.

Booked through WeChat for the equivalent of about $1, the autonomous car picked them up and calmly navigated crowded roads filled with pedestrians, bikes, buses, and unpredictable traffic.

At first, they were nervous, but by the end of the ride, they were completely sold.

Even with all that, the couple admitted some of the robot tech still feels like it is ‘almost there’ rather than fully part of daily life.

But between drone delivery, cashless payments, and self-driving cars, one thing became obvious very quickly: parts of China really do feel like they’re living in 2050, and they certainly aren’t in Nashville anymore.
