A new smartphone just launched with satellite connectivity, thermal imaging, walkie-talkie functionality and a battery so large it can charge other devices

The Oukitel WP61 is not your average smartphone, offering DMR walkie-talkie system, thermal imaging, and a 1200-Lumen light.

The WP61 range is ideal for explorers, adventurers, or those who work in search and rescue.

Durability is at the forefront of the ‘rugged’ smartphones, and they’re a little bit like the Swiss Army Knife of devices, offering a lot more than just a way to communicate.

The smartphone series comes complete with some seriously impressive features, including satellite communication in case your phone’s signal goes down.

The Oukitel WP61 has some very interesting features

In recent months, there has been a rise in the number of people switching to low-tech – or ‘dumbphones’ – but Oukitel has gone the other way, cramming a bunch of unique features into its WP61 series.

The Chinese company has introduced four new devices, starting with the standard WP61, which is a ‘basic rugged smartphone’, all the way up to the WP61 Ti, which has built-in satellite communications.

Other phones in the WP61 series come with a walkie-talkie function, which is good for communication over several miles, and thermal imaging, which can generate heat maps and could be an absolute game-changer for rescue operations.

The smartphones also come with a 1200-Lumen light, a 108MP front camera, an 8MP night vision camera, a Gemini AI assistant, and an ultra-loud speaker.

It’s powered by a 20,000mAh battery, which supports fast-charging, and can be used as an on-the-go powerbank to charge up your other tech.

As well as being packed with features, the phones are designed to stand up to just about whatever you throw at them.

According to Oukitel, the smartphone is built to IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H standards, and can resist dust, five-foot drops, high-pressure water jets, and extreme temperatures from -49F to 167F.

The smartphone comes with a ‘pro-grade toolkit’ and is on sale now

The WP61 series has been designed to work in harsh environments and remote locations.

Its creators say it’s’perfect for outdoor adventures, off-road trips, construction sites, warehouses, and any demanding professional environment’, while highlighting features like its next-level durability and 130 decibel loudspeaker.

It also comes with a ‘pro-grade toolkit’ which includes things like a noise meter, compass, spirit level, bar level, and alarm.

The Oukitel WP61 range is on sale now, with prices starting at $319.99 for the standard edition and $429.99 for the Ultra.

The satellite-enabled WP61 Ti is set to launch later this year and – as yet – pricing hasn’t been revealed.
