Stunning visualization maps 40 years of Voyager 1 movements in the solar system

This incredible visualization shared by NASA shows 40 years of Voyager 1 movements in the solar system.

Voyager 1 was launched on September 5, 1977, alongside its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2; and they are the only spacecraft to ever operate outside the heliosphere – the name given to the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the sun.

The spacecraft did a flyby of Jupiter and Saturn before hitting the interstellar border in 2012.

This neat clip from NASA manages to condense four decades of Voyager 1’s trajectory into a couple of minutes.
