Warning issued for Apple users to stop using app due to 'critical' security risk

A warning has been issued for Apple users to stop using a particular app on their iPhones due to a ‘critical’ security risk.

Data leaks through smartphones are nothing new, as many apps require some data, although some abuse these permissions and sell or share information.

But while much of it is pretty low risk, some are more serious, and there is an app on Apple iPhones that users are being warned to avoid.

The team at Covert Labs has been checking out various apps as part of security research, and one in particular caught their attention.

Which app have Apple Users been told to avoid?

One member of the Covert Labs team posted on X to say:

“STOP USING THIS APP IMMEDIATELY.”

That was a stark warning to those who were using this application.

The app in question is the Chat & Ask AI app.

Harry from Covert Labs said he had found a critical vulnerability within the app itself.

This particular vulnerability has exposed the entire chat history of over 18 million users.

In total, that’s 380 million messages that have been made accessible to anyone.

Essentially, every single message sent via the app is now unprotected.

That also includes personal or sensitive messages that may have been shared via the app.

These vulnerability issues need to be fixed

Harry went on to elaborate on what might have been exposed.

He said:

“Mental health struggles, relationship problems, financial situations, medical questions, things you’d never tell another person.”

Of course, this is a major problem for those who have used the app.

There is no suggestion that the leakage of data has been deliberate.

But it is interesting to see just how much data has been shared by the app.

There is hope that, thanks to the warnings, the app can have these data holes plugged.

What isn’t surprising is that the apps leaking data are related to AI.

Cutting corners to push out apps using AI may have resulted in these leaks.

So it may not just be Apple users who have to be careful with what they use.

But either way, deleting Chat & Ask AI is probably the safest thing to do.
