These are all the new features coming to Apple Pay and there's going to be some exciting upgrades

Apple Pay is about to become a whole lot more useful, with Apple preparing several new features for iPhone users.

The updates are arriving alongside iOS 27 and will make everything from choosing a card to sharing your details at the checkout much easier.

There are four major upgrades already announced, plus a couple of other changes that could make Apple Pay feel very different.

And with iOS 27 arriving this fall, you won’t have to wait too much longer to try them.

Apple Pay is getting a seriously useful new design

One of the biggest changes to features on everyone’s favorite gadgets is also one of the simplest: Apple is redesigning the Apple Pay checkout screen.

When paying online or inside an app, users will be able to swipe between their different cards directly from the checkout screen.

Tapping a card will also bring up a grid showing the available cards in Apple Wallet, making it easier to pick the right one without digging around.

Apple is also making more useful information visible at checkout.

Depending on the card, users could see things like rewards balances, debit account balances, and available pay-later options before deciding how they want to pay.

That could be particularly handy if you have several cards in Apple Wallet and are constantly trying to remember which one gives you the best rewards for a particular purchase.

American Express is also getting in on the action.

Eligible American Express cardholders will be able to use Membership Rewards points directly through Apple Pay when shopping online or in apps, with a new ‘Use Rewards’ option appearing during checkout.

Then there’s Tap to Share, which could make the in-store checkout experience considerably faster.

The feature will let shoppers tap their iPhone against a participating merchant’s iPhone to securely share information such as an email address, shipping address or loyalty details.

They’ll also be able to see their basket in real time and then complete the purchase with Apple Pay on their own iPhone.

There are even more upgrades on the way

Another useful addition is coming for people who use supported debit cards.

Later this year, Apple Pay will let users add money to an eligible debit card directly through Apple Wallet or during an online checkout, removing another little bit of friction from managing their money.

And Apple isn’t stopping with the four features originally announced.

A newer look at iOS 27 has revealed that Apple Pay is also getting a substantially redesigned checkout experience that makes the payment sheet easier to navigate.

Apple has described the broader update as a way to help people make more informed decisions about which payment method to use, while Apple’s developer documentation confirms that the enhanced payment sheet is coming to websites and apps.

There’s also a wider expansion happening away from the software itself.

Walmart has finally started rolling out Apple Pay support in the US, with the retailer saying it will expand to all of its US stores by the end of the year, and Sam’s Club is included in the rollout too.

Beyond Apple Pay itself, iOS 27 is also bringing more capabilities to Apple Wallet, users will be able to split bills using Apple Cash and Apple Intelligence, while Apple’s Wallet updates also include easier ways to add passes and improvements to hotel keys.

So while none of these changes are going to completely reinvent how you tap your iPhone to pay, Apple is making the entire experience considerably smarter.

And considering iOS 27 is expected to launch this fall, Apple Pay users won’t have to wait much longer to start seeing the new features.
