Thieves who apparently had their eyes on valuable AI technology ended up with a rather disappointing haul after stealing two trailers carrying Nvidia and PlusAI branding.

The trailers were taken from outside an autonomous trucking company’s warehouse in California, sparking a search for the missing vehicles.

But whoever was responsible may have been hoping for a much more expensive payday.

Instead of computer chips or high-tech equipment, the trailers were carrying a staggering 40,000 pounds of sand.

Thieves stole two trailers with Nvidia branding

The incident took place in September 2026, when two trailers belonging to futuristic autonomous trucking company PlusAI disappeared from outside its warehouse in Fremont, California.

According to reports, the thieves broke the hand locks securing the trailers before apparently connecting their own tractor cabs and driving them away.

One of the trailers featured Nvidia branding, which could have made it an attractive target for anyone hoping to get their hands on expensive AI hardware.

Nvidia is a major player in the artificial intelligence industry, supplying powerful chips used to train and run AI models.

Its technology is also increasingly important to data centers, making Nvidia-related cargo a potentially lucrative target for criminals.

However, the trailers’ branding did not tell the whole story.

PlusAI works with Nvidia on AI software and autonomous trucking technology, and the trailers were being used for research and development rather than transporting valuable computing equipment.

The trailers were carrying 40,000 pounds of sand

Instead of finding a fortune in computer chips, the thieves apparently discovered that each trailer contained around 20,000 pounds of sand.

That added up to 40,000 pounds across the two trailers – roughly 20 US tons of material.

While a mountain of sand might not sound particularly useful to someone looking for expensive electronics, it served an important purpose for PlusAI.

The company uses simulated loads to help with research and development testing, allowing its team to work with trailers carrying weight more like that of real freight.

The company’s technology-equipped truck cabs were still inside the warehouse and were not taken during the theft.

Still, if they were hoping to strike gold by targeting Nvidia-branded equipment, a couple of enormous loads of sand would have been a serious disappointment.

A lucky message helped recover the missing trailers

The missing trailers were discovered thanks to an unexpected message sent to a PlusAI executive.

On September 24, an acquaintance contacted the executive after spotting two of the company’s vehicles near their workplace in Newark, California.

The message read: “I have been proud of you for your adventure and success at Plus. Just saw two of your trucks near my work place! :)”

There was just one problem: the trailers were supposed to be parked outside PlusAI’s warehouse, around half a mile away.

The unexpected sighting prompted action, and police became involved in recovering the missing equipment.

Both trailers were recovered later that day, with all 40,000 pounds of sand still inside.

The Fremont Police Department was investigating the theft, and authorities had not announced any arrests at the time of reporting.

The incident comes as valuable technology cargo has increasingly attracted the attention of thieves, with computer equipment destined for data centers among the targets.

In this case, though, the apparent attempt to make off with valuable cargo ended with the trailers being returned and their sandy contents accounted for.
