There's a mod for Windows 11 that 42,000,000 people have downloaded and this is what it does

Windows 11 has been around for years now, but plenty of users still aren’t happy with some of the changes Microsoft made to its interface, so they’ve turned to a mod.
The frustration with Microsoft’s changes has caused this one free customization tool to become a surprise hit, racking up an astonishing 42 million downloads despite flying largely under the radar.
The software, called ExplorerPatcher, lets people bring back features from older versions of Windows without completely replacing the operating system.
It’s easy to understand why it’s become so popular.
Why 42 million people downloaded this Windows 11 mod
ExplorerPatcher is a free, open source piece of tech designed specifically for Windows 11 users who miss certain features from Windows 10 and earlier versions of the operating system.
Rather than creating a completely new interface, ExplorerPatcher taps into elements that already exist within Windows and gives users access to underrated features Microsoft either removed or redesigned.

One of its most popular changes is restoring the classic Windows 10 taskbar, complete with labels on app icons and more flexible positioning options.
Users can even move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen, something Windows 11 no longer allows by default.
The software also brings back the full right-click context menu, eliminating the extra click required to access older options in Windows 11.
File Explorer can be customized to restore the familiar ribbon interface, while users can also switch back to the Windows 10 Start menu if they prefer its layout.

The software isn’t perfect, though
Of course, there’s a reason Microsoft doesn’t officially support modifications like this.
Because ExplorerPatcher works by hooking directly into Windows Explorer, antivirus software can occasionally flag it, and major Windows updates have sometimes caused compatibility issues until developers release fixes.

That has led to mixed reviews among users.
On the mod’s website, some Windows fans describe it as a ‘lifesaver’ that makes Windows 11 far more usable, while others have reported crashes or broken features after installing major operating system updates.

Still, with tens of millions of downloads, ExplorerPatcher has become one of the clearest signs that many Windows users still prefer some of the design choices Microsoft left behind.
For those who never warmed to Windows 11’s modern look, the software offers a way to bring back familiar features without rolling back to an older operating system altogether.
