The company’s 20th-anniversary iPhone is expected to arrive in 2027, and rumors have suggested Apple is planning a major redesign to mark the occasion.
Now, a fresh rumor has fans debating whether the next-generation Pro iPhones are about to change displays.
And depending on who you ask, that’s either very exciting or a terrible idea.

Apple’s 20th anniversary of one of the most iconic gadgets ever, the iPhone, seems to be an occasion where Apple goes a bit wild.
The original iPhone launched in 2007, meaning 2027 will mark two decades since Steve Jobs first introduced Apple’s smartphone to the world.
That has led to plenty of speculation that the company is planning something rather special for the anniversary.
Several reports have suggested Apple is working on a significant redesign for the 20th-anniversary iPhone, including a display that could extend much closer to the edges of the handset.
MacRumors reported that Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station claimed Apple is testing a display measuring around 6.96 inches for its 20th-anniversary iPhone.
The report suggested it could be marketed as a 7-inch display if it makes it into the final product, although it remains unclear whether this exact panel will definitely appear in the iPhone 20 Pro Max.
That could be important when it comes to the latest screen-size rumor.
Apple doesn’t necessarily need to make the entire phone dramatically larger to fit a bigger display inside it, the company has already demonstrated how much screen real estate can be squeezed into a relatively manageable body by reducing bezels.
The current iPhone 17 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch screen.
So the idea of Apple pushing the display sizes further isn’t completely out of nowhere, but the rumored numbers have still left some people wondering whether Apple has finally gone too far.

The rumor has already sparked a mixed reaction online, with people responding to an X post about the potential screen sizes with very different takes.
Some are apparently more than happy to see Apple go bigger.
“Once upon a time I was against bigger screens, but since have the iPhone 17 Pro Max and am finding I actually like the bigger screens. So 7-inch screen would be for me…,” one person wrote.
Another person was considerably less enthusiastic, asking: “Who tf wants a bigger screen AGAIN good lord dude. Buy a tablet.”
Others seemed to think Apple should stop somewhere in between.
“Apple should make the Pro models with a 6.5-inch display – that’s the sweet spot. 11 Pro Max was just perfect,” one commenter wrote.
Another agreed, calling 6.5 inches the ‘goldilocks zone’ for a phone and pointing out that many smartphones were around that size in the late 2010s.

Apple has also reportedly been working toward a major anniversary redesign, with previous reports pointing toward a more immersive display and glass that could curve around the edges of the phone.
That could allow Apple to squeeze a surprising amount of screen into the phone without simply making it proportionally larger.
Still, there are plenty of people who already find the Pro Max a handful, so the iPhone 20 Pro Max might push them over the edge.
The idea of carrying around a phone with a screen approaching seven inches will be fantastic for anyone who treats their smartphone as a solution for everything.
For everyone else, it could be the point where ‘big phone’ starts edging into ‘why didn’t I just bring an iPad?‘.

You probably don’t need to start measuring your pockets just yet for appropriate screen sizes.
But if Apple really is preparing a 7-inch iPhone for its 20th anniversary, it looks like the biggest iPhone ever could also become one of its most controversial.
